Introduction to Mise en scene Organizer

 Introduction

The objective of today's lesson is to analyze elements of mise en scene and hopefully get a better understanding of it as well. Mise en scene is essentially the "setting of the stage" arranging scenery and props in a movie or play. Films are always using mise en scene to create signs, which can be decoded using semiotics which will be explained in depth later. Mise en scene is important when it comes to engaging viewers in the movie they're watching and allowing them to analyze the purpose of the scenery and props chosen. Its also a significant part of a movie because it tells readers things about the movie that the actors or dialogue can't. A genre in film is the theme/style of a movie and it's supported by mise en scene. For example, in a horror movie there might be dark lighting and fast cuts in editing. Semiotics and mise en scene have a very big connection and they are one of the most important things in a film or movie. Like mentioned above, mise en scene creates signs like lighting or costume that can be explained using semiotics. An example of this would be Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 which features a bright, golden hued lighting illustrating space and the sun/stars. The characters are also wearing leather, warrior themed clothes which tells viewers that they're guardians who are fighting a giant space creature. Not to mention a character named Drax who is gray with red markings which tells us she's an extraterrestrial. This fits fits into the makeup and costume category of mise en scene too.

Reflection
In conclusion, Miss en Scene is a tool used for analyzing media such as films or tv shows. It can vary from a character’s outfit and makeup to the composition or setting of the film. Mise en scene helps establish the mood or theme of a movie and has been used for many years. Movies like Jumanji, Barbie, and the Godfather include mise en scene because it is one of the most important elements of a movie. In fact, viewers use mise en scene to draw conclusions from a movie or to establish the movie’s overall attitude or tone.
