Introduction to Mise en scene Organizer

 Introduction

The objective of today's lesson is to analyze elements of mise en scene and hopefully get a better understanding of it as well. Mise en scene is essentially the "setting of the stage" arranging scenery and props in a movie or play. Films are always using mise en scene to create signs, which can be decoded using semiotics which will be explained in depth later. Mise en scene is important when it comes to engaging viewers in the movie they're watching and allowing them to analyze the purpose of the scenery and props chosen. Its also a significant part of a movie because it tells readers things about the movie that the actors or dialogue can't. A genre in film is the theme/style of a movie and it's supported by mise en scene. For example, in a horror movie there might be dark lighting and fast cuts in editing. Semiotics and mise en scene have a very big connection and they are one of the most important things in a film or movie. Like mentioned above, mise en scene creates signs like lighting or costume that can be explained using semiotics. An example of this would be Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 which features a bright, golden hued lighting illustrating space and the sun/stars. The characters are also wearing leather, warrior themed clothes which tells viewers that they're guardians who are fighting a giant space creature. Not to mention a character named Drax who is gray with red markings which tells us she's an extraterrestrial. This fits fits into the makeup and costume category of mise en scene too.

Reflection
In conclusion, Miss en Scene is a tool used for analyzing media such as films or tv shows. It can vary from a character’s outfit and makeup to the composition or setting of the film. Mise en scene helps establish the mood or theme of a movie and has been used for many years. Movies like Jumanji, Barbie, and the Godfather include mise en scene because it is one of the most important elements of a movie. In fact, viewers use mise en scene to draw conclusions from a movie or to establish the movie’s overall attitude or tone.

Roland Barthes' Theory of Denotative and Connotative Signs

Introduction to Roland Barthes' Theory of Denotative and Connotative Signs

Roland Barthes is a French essayist and literary critic who was born on November 12, 1915. He was also a semiotician so he had a big hand into developing the semiotics we know of today. Barthes has many achievements, but it can be argued that his theory of denotative and connotative signs is one of the greatest. He supported Saussure's theory of sins, but he believed his was a large part of the signification process and signs in general. Everyday people uses Barthes theory constantly without even realizing. I chose a purple and blue color scheme to match with my blog and used New Times Roman as my font so it would be cohesive.

Reflection

The application used to create this post was my laptop with PowerPoint, as well as my iPad. I also use these devices to conduct research and find material for this post. Looking back to my limited knowledge regarding Barthes' theory of denotative and connotative signs, I believe it has expanded a lot after researching. I understand the basics as well as the more advanced examples and topics involving his theory so its safe to say that I am advanced when it comes to Barthes' theory.

Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory of Semiotics Analysis

Introduction to Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory of Signs

Ferdinand de Saussure was a swiss linguist who developed ideas that laid a foundation involving linguistics and paved the way to future developments with semiotics. Saussure came up with the theory of signs, or the semiological system, as he calls it which is used commonly in semiotics. Saussure's theory was that a sign consisted of two parts, a signifier and the signified, but he also believed the meaning of a sign depended on the context surrounding the sign. I created a PowerPoint involving three slides alongside my team mate. The PowerPoint goes into depth about Saussure's theory of signs defining vocabulary and it provides examples of his theory in play using a table. Me and my partner chose a whiteboard looking effect with a wooden border that looks like a floor to create an educational looking environment. We chose this particular font for the PowerPoint because it looks more professional and leaves space making the PowerPoint seem bigger. I contributed to this product  by defining the vocabulary and doing some examples from the table below. I also changed the theme of the PowerPoint to make it more official. In the movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, it starts off with a dark and brownish lighting which signifies the deaths and grief . It also creates a moody, ominous feeling in the film. This signifier correlates with Harry Potter who has always been surrounded by death his entire life losing his parents when he was a baby and later on losing a classmate and his last living relative.

Reflection

The application I used to do the work is a laptop with the PowerPoint program to create my slides and do my research.  Due to the research I've conducted on the topic of Ferdinand de Saussure's theory of sign, I believe I am an intermediate when it comes to understanding his theory. While I do understand the basics, I believe with more practice and more analyzation of films, I will be become an advanced expert at using his theory.
