Sound Codes

 Introduction

Sound makes up a major part of a movie and film, and this rings true for Scream 6. Scream 6 is a horror movie and like many horror movies sound design is important to build up fear and paranoia. The sounds and music used in Scream also build up tension making the audiences feel a sense of dread that something bad will happen. Sounds effects used in scream are creepy, loud ringtone coming from a phone and distorted noises, but even just pure, unfiltered silence can cause fear. The music featured in Scream 6 is haunting and the pacing of the music increases as the threat gets closer. Slow paced music is also played in the movie, but it keeps the audience on their toes giving them the feeling that something is wrong.  All the sounds create a sense of foreboding which captures the eerie atmosphere of the film.

Sound Techniques and Definitions

Document sound

Meaning is established by sounds to support the genre.

Dialogue

Laura: You say that but try teaching a class on 20th century slashers to a bunch of hungover nineteen-year-olds

Slashers? What’s your favorite scary movie?

Laura: Not that one

So why slashers?

This dialogue humanizes Laura, making her more relatable and endearing to the audience. It also sets the stage for the horrors that will unfold, as Laura's knowledge of horror movies might become all too relevant.

These lines from the dialogues work together to create a sense of tension, unease, and fear, drawing the audience into the film's dark and suspenseful world.

Sound effects

- Ominous, pulsing phone ringtone

- Distorted, eerie ambient noise (e.g., creaking, whispers)

These sounds help set the tone for a horror movie, drawing the audience into the film's dark atmosphere.

Music

Red Right Hand

The song's ominous, haunting melody creates a sense of foreboding and tension, perfectly capturing the eerie atmosphere of the film.

Reflection

After doing all this research on Scream 6, a popular horror movie, my team and I gained more knowledge on what goes into advertising and producing a good horror movie. Sound design is one of the things I have new knowledge about and I've become more informed on it. I have become advanced at understanding the use of sound design in horror to make the audience engaged and on edge. Sound is makes up everyday life and when altered and purposely used in certain ways, it can create specific emotions. My group and I used Word to  type all of our research notes on and we used school laptops, personal iPads, and personal laptops/computers.
