Mise en scene Codes

 Introduction 

    Mise en Scene is the use of elements such as set design and props, costume, makeup and hair, color, composition, setting, lighting, and acting to set the stage for a movie or film. Scream 6 features all of these elements and its main strength is costume and makeup, acting, and lighting. Ghostface wears a black flowy costume that signifies the Grim Reaper which is the symbol for death. Ghostface also has a ghost mask adding onto the dead theme. The acting of characters such as Laura, who is featured in the beginning of the movie and the first victim of murder, make readers feel legitimately concerned for her as she portrays herself as an innocent woman who was just looking for a chance at love. Lighting helps add to the constant fear and suspense shown in Scream as the harsh lighting signifies danger and death.

1.     Setting

a)     Define the setting in film.

The setting in a film is the time and place in which the story takes place. 

b)     Where is the story set?

The 2023 movie Scream VI is set in New York City.

c)      Describe the setting of the film. See chart below.

·        Time of day	Night	Nighttime settings can create a sense of foreboding, mystery, or suspense drawing the audience into the story.
• Time period	Present day	The use of modern technology, such as smartphones, and contemporary clothing suggests that the film takes place in the present day.
• Location	New York City	The film opens in New York City, specifically in a busy and crowded area, which creates a sense of unease and vulnerability.
• Climate / Season	during Fall	The fall season creates a cozy and festive atmosphere, which contrasts with the horror elements that unfold.
Geography• Landscape or Outdoors / City / Country / Sea / Land /            Desert.	Urban setting	The film opens in an urban environment, specifically in New York City, which creates a sense of density and crowding.
• Culture / People (Moral attitudes/ core beliefs.)	Youth culture	The film opens with a group of young adults, likely college students, which immediately establishes a connection to youth culture.
• Social and Economic status	College students or young professionals	The characters' ages and activities imply that they are likely college students or young professionals, which may shape their social dynamics and relationships.

 

Reflection 

    In order to do this research my team and I used laptops, iPads, and computers. We also utilized PowerPoint to add these shots into the Word Document. Mise en Scene is an important part of a film because it helps create the entire film. Without mise en scene a film wouldn't be as engaging or evoking. Mise en Scene is a necessary part of a film as it helps build character interaction, feeling, and actions. Essentially, mise en scene can be considered world building as it introduces the audience to the movie's world and location, but it also introduces the characters and their personalities.
