Sound Codes

 Introduction

Sound makes up a major part of a movie and film, and this rings true for Scream 6. Scream 6 is a horror movie and like many horror movies sound design is important to build up fear and paranoia. The sounds and music used in Scream also build up tension making the audiences feel a sense of dread that something bad will happen. Sounds effects used in scream are creepy, loud ringtone coming from a phone and distorted noises, but even just pure, unfiltered silence can cause fear. The music featured in Scream 6 is haunting and the pacing of the music increases as the threat gets closer. Slow paced music is also played in the movie, but it keeps the audience on their toes giving them the feeling that something is wrong.  All the sounds create a sense of foreboding which captures the eerie atmosphere of the film.

Research Part 6: Sound Codes

1.     Introduction

2.     How would you describe the sound in the opening sequence, and what were the decisions made by the sound engineer to support the genre of the film?

The sound design is eerie, ominous, and intentionally unsettling. The audio is crisp and clear, with a focus on creating an unnerving atmosphere.

3.     Provide examples from the sequence's dialogue, music, and sound effects.

Sound Techniques and Definitions

Document sound

Meaning is established by sounds to support the genre.

Dialogue

Laura: You say that but try teaching a class on 20th century slashers to a bunch of hungover nineteen-year-olds

Slashers? What’s your favorite scary movie?

Laura: Not that one

So why slashers?

This dialogue humanizes Laura, making her more relatable and endearing to the audience. It also sets the stage for the horrors that will unfold, as Laura's knowledge of horror movies might become all too relevant.

These lines from the dialogues work together to create a sense of tension, unease, and fear, drawing the audience into the film's dark and suspenseful world.

Sound effects

- Ominous, pulsing phone ringtone

- Distorted, eerie ambient noise (e.g., creaking, whispers)

These sounds help set the tone for a horror movie, drawing the audience into the film's dark atmosphere.

Music

Red Right Hand

The song's ominous, haunting melody creates a sense of foreboding and tension, perfectly capturing the eerie atmosphere of the film.

Reflection

After doing all this research on Scream 6, a popular horror movie, my team and I gained more knowledge on what goes into advertising and producing a good horror movie. Sound design is one of the things I have new knowledge about and I've become more informed on it. I have become advanced at understanding the use of sound design in horror to make the audience engaged and on edge. Sound is makes up everyday life and when altered and purposely used in certain ways, it can create specific emotions. My group and I used Word to  type all of our research notes on and we used school laptops, personal iPads, and personal laptops/computers.

Mise en scene Codes

 Introduction

Mise en Scene is the use of elements such as set design and props, costume, makeup and hair, color, composition, setting, lighting, and acting to set the stage for a movie or film. Scream 6 features all of these elements and its main strength is costume and makeup, acting, and lighting. Ghostface wears a black flowy costume that signifies the Grim Reaper which is the symbol for death. Ghostface also has a ghost mask adding onto the dead theme. The acting of characters such as Laura, who is featured in the beginning of the movie and the first victim of murder, make readers feel legitimately concerned for her as she portrays herself as an innocent woman who was just looking for a chance at love. Lighting helps add to the constant fear and suspense shown in Scream as the harsh lighting signifies danger and death.

Reflection

In order to do this research my team and I used laptops, iPads, and computers. We also utilized PowerPoint to add these shots into the Word Document. Mise en Scene is an important part of a film because it helps create the entire film. Without mise en scene a film wouldn't be as engaging or evoking. Mise en Scene is a necessary part of a film as it helps build character interaction, feeling, and actions. Essentially, mise en scene can be considered world building as it introduces the audience to the movie's world and location, but it also introduces the characters and their personalities.

Marketing to Audiences

 Introduction

Marketing to audiences, especially target audiences, is necessary to have your movie reach the right people who will actually be interested in your movie. Marketing strategies can be shown in print, digital, outdoor media, and movie image. Scream 6 uses all these strategies to market their films to young adults and teens. By using these strategies, Spyglass Media Group builds awareness, generates excitement, and guarantees future movie buyers/consumers. Spyglass Media Group with the help of Paramount Pictures uses nostalgia of the previous Scream films, such as recasting Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers, to engage with their audience. The marketing specifically varies from posters to talk shows.

Research Part 3: Marketing to Audiences

Reflection

By utilizing these strategies, Scream 6 successfully marketed to their audience using all these strategies. This resulted in a large crowd of people seeing the movie immediately in theaters. These marketing strategies ensured Scream 6 would be something people were looking forward to and this kept the film relevant. Programs such as PowerPoint and Word were used to save and present our research to post on our blogs. Like always, my group and I used school laptops, personal iPads, personal laptops, and computers to do our research.

Opening Structure of Film Analysis, Camerawork, and Editing Codes

 Introduction

My group and I analyzed the opening structure of Scream 6, as well as the camerawork and editing codes. By doing this we hoped to get a better understanding of how the producers successfully used tension and suspense. Scream 6 featured a lot close up shots to emphasize what the characters were seeing to engage the audience. Some shots featured dramatic lighting to highlight the emotions the actors depicted  for the characters. Rapid cuts and shifts in lighting and angle keep the audience on edge by showing danger and unpredictability. It also immerses the audience so they can feel the characters paranoia and anxiety such as Laura walking down a dark hallway which is a contrast from the brighter lighting in the previous shot.

Reflection

Analyzing these elements ensure that the audience is able to feel the emotions the characters are feeling. Creating harsh lighting and quick cuts can help build up the suspense and tension that is common in most horror movies. These not only immerse the audience, but also create an enjoyable experience. While horror is scary for some, it can be entertaining and exciting to feel the adrenaline that comes from a good scare, but a good scare can only be successful if it is cinematically good. Every decision made with lighting, editing, and camerawork determines whether or not if a horror film will be cinematically enjoyable. Word was the program my team and I used to include the shots and their information. We also used technology such as iPads, laptops, and computers.

 Reflection

After doing research about the general information of Scream 6 such as the plot and the money it made, I can better understand what people look for in a horror movie. Doing a case study is important so my group and I can better understand what should go into creating our horror film to hopefully engage and interest our audience. In order to show our research of the general information of Scream 6, my group and I used school laptops and personal devices such as iPads and personal laptops/computers. We also used Word to actually present the information.
